Know all the theories.
Master all the techniques.
But as you touch a human soul be just another human soul.

Our Mission
La’akea Grief Support is devoted to creating content to educate, support and comfort those moving through loss and grief. We provide concise and gentle guidance, meeting the griever where they are in their process, allowing them to gracefully navigate their way, on their terms, at their own pace.
Our ‘Ohana
Kristin Bathen ~ Founder
(She/Her/Hers)
I was born and raised in Hawai’i, spending my childhood sailing the islands with my ‘ohana (family) before setting roots down on the windward side of Oahu with my two rescue pups. I work in the field of palliative care as a nurse practitioner and as a grief educator who helps those navigate grief after the loss of a loved one.
Personally, I experienced multiple losses over the course of four years and I found myself struggling. I believe that healing of self is as important as holding a healing space for others, so I enrolled in a grief education program searching for structure and valuable tools to help process the grief I was experiencing. A certified grief educator is committed to providing the highest level of grief support through education, experience, and insights into the often unacknowledged rocky terrain of grief. I have been walking this path with my patients on their journey for over twenty years and earning my certification as a grief educator felt like a natural progression in order to best support my own healing and those I hold space for.
If you were born / raised in Hawai’i then you know we were taught to live ha’aha’a, which means to be meek or unpretentious. Those that live ha’aha’a come from a place of love, listen when others speak, withhold judgement, and do not raise themselves above others. I also recognize that it may be important to you to understand / know a little more about me and my professional background.
